Lucky Seven Our good friend Mike Atchley had been asking for about a year if he could sit in on our rehearsals and jam with us. His old band, Caustic Soul, had shut down and he was looking for a place to simply exercise his art. However, scheduling was problematic for many months, and he only showed up on rare occassions. Once his schedule calmed down a bit, Mike put together a band of his own called 3 Sheets, and as luck would have it, this was about the time Whirly Jig 2.0 was reviewing all its material and reworking arrangements for the new band constituency. Mike started showing up fairly regularly at our rehearsals, and working his banjo and concertina into our arrangements. As the months wore on, Mike indicated an interest in playing at our shows, so we started making some of our arrangements feature his instrumentation more strongly. Whirly Jig's first new contracts were all centered around St. Patrick's Day and the weekend before, and by the time we finished the second gig everyone was indicating an interest in just asking Mikey to join us outright. After the third and final gig of the St. Paddy's 2009 celebration, we did just that, and he joined Whirly Jig full time. We are seven again, and hope to stay that way for awhile. |
